Frequently asked questions.
1. What is DBT, and how can it help with chronic pain?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based therapy that teaches skills for managing emotions, tolerating distress, and improving relationships. In this course, we adapt DBT skills to help you better cope with the emotional impact of chronic pain, reduce suffering, and improve your quality of life.
2. Do I need to have a mental health diagnosis to join?
Not at all. This course is for anyone living with chronic pain who wants to learn practical skills to cope with the emotional, mental, and relational challenges that often accompany it.
3. Will this course get rid of my pain?
No, the goal is not to eliminate pain—but to reduce the suffering that comes with it. By learning new ways to respond to pain-related thoughts and emotions, many people find they feel more in control, less overwhelmed, and better equipped to manage daily life.
4. What kinds of skills will I learn?
You’ll learn skills in four key areas:
Mindfulness – staying present, observing thoughts and sensations
Distress Tolerance – surviving crises without making things worse
Emotion Regulation – understanding and managing difficult emotions
Interpersonal Effectiveness – improving communication and relationships
All skills are taught with the challenges of chronic pain in mind.
5. Is this a therapy group?
No, this is a skills group, not a therapy group. It focuses on learning and practicing DBT skills, rather than processing individual trauma or exploring your personal history. That said, the space is supportive and guided by a trained facilitator.
6. What if I miss a session?
We understand that pain can be unpredictable. While consistent attendance helps you get the most out of the course, we provide resources to help you catch up if you miss a session—such as recordings, slides, or follow-up summaries.
7. Can I do this course alongside other treatments?
Yes! DBT skills complement medical treatment, physiotherapy, psychology, and other pain management strategies. This course can be a valuable part of a broader self-care and recovery plan.
8. Will I need to share personal details with the group?
Sharing is always optional. You are encouraged to participate in skill practices and discussions, but you don’t need to share anything that feels too personal. This is a learning space, not a therapy circle.
9. How long is the course, and what is the format?
The course runs for 20 weeks and is delivered online via Zoom. Each session lasts around 90 minutes and includes teaching, skills practice, and discussion. You’ll also receive handouts, worksheets, and optional weekly homework.
10. What if I’m not sure I can commit to 20 weeks?
I understand. Chronic pain can affect energy and consistency. While I encourage full participation, the group is designed with flexibility and compassion. You’re welcome to speak with me before signing up to explore whether it’s the right fit for you.
