What to Expect in a Psychiatric Consultation
By Dr. Michelle Beukes-King – Psychiatrist, Tzaneen, Phalaborwa & Louis Trichardt
Taking the first step to meet with a psychiatrist can feel daunting — especially if you’re not sure what to expect. Whether you’re seeking support for depression, anxiety, ADHD, chronic pain, or other mental health concerns, a psychiatric consultation is designed to be a safe and supportive starting point in your journey toward wellness.
The Purpose of the First Appointment
The initial consultation is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. My goal is to understand your current struggles, how they’re affecting your daily life, and what support might help. It’s also a time for you to ask questions, share your concerns, and feel heard.
What Happens During the Consultation?
Here’s what typically takes place:
We’ll talk about your current symptoms.
You’ll be invited to describe what brought you to seek help — emotionally, mentally, and physically. No concern is too big or too small. We’ll explore your background.
This may include your personal history, medical and family history, relationships, work, and how you’ve coped in the past. We’ll review any previous treatments.
If you’ve seen other professionals or tried medication, therapy, or alternative approaches, we’ll talk about what worked and what didn’t.We’ll start developing a plan together.
Depending on your needs, this might include:A follow-up appointment
A medication review or trial
Referral to therapy or group skills training (such as DBT)
A collaborative care plan for chronic pain, if relevant
What You Don’t Need to Worry About:
You don’t need to know exactly what’s “wrong” — figuring that out is part of the process.
You don’t need to have everything perfectly explained — I’ll guide the conversation with sensitivity.
You won’t be judged — this is a space of compassion, not criticism.
In-Person and Online Consultations
I offer both in-person consultations in Tzaneen, Phalaborwa, and Louis Trichardt, as well as online consultations for people living in South Africa. You can choose what feels most comfortable and accessible to you.
